For obvious reasons, it’s been a strange year for us all, so we won’t start with the boring platitudes you’ve heard being trotted out since March.
When we started Sun 13 back in July we didn’t know what to expect. In fact, there were no expectations other than just doing what we love – writing about music from both past and present.
Still, we are under no illusions. We know what we cover is, for the most part, occupying a microcosm leaning heavily towards outsider culture. That won’t change.
DIY culture is important to us and we’ll be doing anything possible to kick against the trends of clandestine business partners, being powered by faceless marketing companies, or being a gateway for advertorial space which are all facets that are fast becoming a scourge in cultural online publications.
We don’t write for clicks. We don’t write for shock value. We don’t write for money, or any of that other bullshit. We write about what we love, and those with enough curiosity will stumble upon our musings in time.
Yes, it’s a tough slog in this space. Even more so by adopting the above principles, which have resulted in so many online music publications going to the wall both pre-COVID and during.
However, someone has to at least try and keep the midnight oil burning, so here we are…
We participate to escape all the outside noise, instead focusing our energies into creating something (hopefully) positive.
David Byrne’s American Utopia – “there’s never a dull moment”
The response has completely overwhelmed us. To receive such positive messages has blown us away and confirms to us that there are people out there who actually do care – something we lose sight on from time to time.
While adulation is undoubtedly a by-product of why we do this, to us it’s still vital to acknowledge these humbling messages, so with that, we say wholehearted thank you.
While the festive period is a great time for some, it’s absolutely horrendous for others, so those fortunate enough to be spending time with loved ones, please do spare a thought for those in less fortunate positions. Pick up the phone and make sure they are okay.
We will be providing the odd piece during the next couple of weeks so keep checking in.
