Loscil announces new album

Scott Morgan reveals details of his latest solo release.

Loscil (a.k.a. Scott Morgan) has announced details of his return to kranky, marking his first solo release on the label since 2021’s Clara.

Lake Fire will be released on May 2 via the Chicago label. Earlier today, Morgan shared the album’s two lead tracks, Arrhythmia and Spark, which you can listen to below.

On the back of two excellent collaboration releases alongside Lawrence English (last year’s Chroma and 2023’s Colours of Air – the latter also via kranky), plus a selection of self-released recordings including last year’s Umbel, Lake Fire is said to be inspired by the tension within the cycle of destruction and rejuvenation.

Lake Fire is the result of a disjointed creative process. Originally conceived as a suite for electronics and ensemble, most of the original compositions were deserted, except for Ash Clouds (featuring James Meager on double bass). From the remnants of the abandoned work, Morgan the remaining tracks were reshaped and remixed.

The final result, said to be impressions from a road trip into the mountains marking a personal half-century milestone, surrounded by wildfires and dense smoke; celebrating life while the world burns. The album’s title comes from the striking irony that forest fires are often named after regional lakes. The cover photos were taken from this same trip.
