Video Premiere: Adrián de Alfonso’s ‘La cara estúpida del ritmo’

The Spanish artist shares the Juniper Foam directed video for the song taken from his LP, ‘Viator’.

At the backend of 2024, Spanish artist, Adrián de Alfonso (ex-Don The Tiger) released his excellent album, Viator. A crooning, savage dose of baroque rock inspired by the likes Bone Machine-era Tom Waits and Scott Walker, it was one of the many highlights of the year under the stable of the venerable Maple Death Records.

Today, de Alfonso shares the video for one of the tracks from Viator, La cara estúpida del ritmo (translation: the stupid face of rhythm). Exclusive to Sun 13, be the first to watch/listen below.

Directed by Juniper Foam with creative direction by Roshanak Amini, the video for La cara estúpida del ritmo passes off with a radiance of nostalgia. Echoes of Lynch and ’90s-era Jarmusch, and where the latter is concerned, de Alfonso’s rich, cosmic wanderings feel like the sonic bedding for one of his many abstract scenes.

Speaking of video, de Alfonso comments:

“This is a broadcast from the intermediate state of slumber, shot by Juniper Foam with the close collaboration of Roshanak Amini. From the very first minute, my friend/sorceress Maria Kremeti and I fell into a kind of hypnosis that had us wandering in front of the camera without quite understanding why or what we were doing. Better trust the bearer, I thought, especially when you’re being led through such sludgy ruts…”

Foam also offers comment:

“We enter into the lonely rituals of a traveller who’s embarking on a journey toward trance-like states of mind. Set against the slow-burning serenades of Adrián de Alfonso, the imagery evokes an awakening, delusions of grandeur, and the timeless yearning of the soul.”

Viator is out now via Maple Death Records. Purchase from Bandcamp.
