Holy Sons, the long-standing solo project of Emil Amos (Grails, Om, Lilacs & Champagne), has announced details of his much-anticipated follow-up album to Raw and Disfigured – the inaugural winner of Sun 13’s Top 50 Albums of 2020.
Puritan Themes is set for release on October 31 via Thrill Jockey. Earlier today, Amos shared two tracks from the album – the opening eponymous song and Chain Gain. Listen to both songs below.
Following the release of Grails’ excellent new LP, Miracle Music (our two-part interview is here and here), Puritan Themes was completed away from Amos’ Chapel Hill, North Carolina-base in Chicago last month where he finished recording and mixing the album.
During his stay in Chicago, Amos would skate through Douglass Park listening to ’70s AM radio before spending late nights listening to Bee Gees interviews. Speaking of the track, Chain Gang – which features Kelly Pratt (David Byrne, M Ward) playing and arranging the horns – Amos explains:
“It’s an imaginary take on if Cat Stevens had smoked a ton of salvia and taken a much darker route within the world of dense, story-telling songwriting.”
Stay tuned for our feature-length interview with Amos discussing Puritan Themes as well as the recently released Lost Decade IV – the latest from his celebrated catalogue of lo-fi recordings.
