Penryn first came to our attention as a largely unknown quantity. All we did know about them was the music on their Angel Wing EP, a record full of esoteric and angular techno rhythms that took me and my dancing feet back to the heady, post club chilling sessions on the 90s.
Since then we have found out some more information about Penryn, to add some flesh to the bare bones, but there is still an air of mystery about who Penryn actually are. This provides a not unwelcome air of mystery that goes with the music. It is not about who they are, it is about the music they make.
To help us feel we know Penryn a little better, we thought this to be a good time to subject them to one of our 13 Questions grillings. Read on to find out more about shouting at Mario Kart, young headbutts and bumping into Aphex Twin.
Sun 13: Where are you and what are you doing?
Penryn: “Right now, I’m in my flat in Bristol, writing my answers to these questions and listening to Christina Vantzou.”
S13: When did you last make yourself do something you didn’t want to?
P: “Most recently it was getting rid of a lead synth from a track I’m working on. I really liked the sound but it just wasn’t working in the song.”
S13: When did you last get into an argument?
P: “I think it was a molecular tiff with my partner that resolved within minutes.”
S13: What is your earliest memory?
P: “It might not be the earliest but when I was about 6 or so I butted heads with someone on the playground and my tooth basically went through my lip. It might have been the first time I really bled; my mouth kept filling up with blood and I had to keep spitting it out. I can still feel the scar inside my mouth. That memory became the inspiration for my tune Freckles, Teeth, Gums, and Blood.”
S13: What is the last album you listened to?
P: “I gave Four Tet’s newest album Three a proper re-listen the other day. I love how simple and unassuming that album is while still feeling very textured and emotional.”

S13: When did you last consider quitting social media?
P: “That is a constant consideration of mine; I really dislike the way social media convinces you to stay with it. Escaping its grip is never as simple as it sounds.”
S13: What’s the best night out you’ve ever had?
P: “It would probably have to be the night of my graduation. I was surrounded by good friends all in the highest of spirits despite the biting melancholy of it all being over. I briefly met Aphex Twin that night as well which was very surreal.”
Sun 13’s Top 50 Albums of 2024
S13: Vinyl, CD, MP3 or Streaming?
P: “Personally, I use streaming for my day to day listening. I’ve discovered loads of music that way but I know it’s not the best listening experience. I have a turntable and hi-fi at my parent’s house that I can’t fit in my current flat but it’s always a treat to fire it up when I’m home.”
Sun 13: What is your favourite view?
P: “I always took great pleasure in looking out to sea at night from Castle Beach in Falmouth. You can see ships in the distance with their lights on and all the stars on display against infinite blackness.”
S13: When did you last shout at the TV?
P: “It’s not something I do often but if I’m shouting at the TV, it’s probably something to do with Mario Kart.”
Dan Guidance: Freedom of Movement – Album Review
S13: What was the first gig you went to?
P: “I’m pretty sure I went to a Mika concert with my family when I was really young. I had just quit drum lessons so my parents had sold my kit and I got really depressed watching the drummer; I was filled with regret.”
S13: Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. Is there anything else you’d like to say?
P: “My EP Angel Wing is available on all digital platforms, it’s got off-kilter beats and melancholic synths so if that’s your thing give it a listen.
“Also, thanks for having me and taking the time to ask me some questions.”
Angel Wing is out now via Duckland. Purchase from Bandcamp.
