Following the single Love Lies, Californian queer, non-binary musician and poet, Caleb Nichols, returns with his second single in 2025, Hag Stone.
Set to feature on Caleb Nichols’ forthcoming album and follow-up to 2023’s Kill Rock Stars release, Let’s Look Back, Hag Stone was recorded and mixed by Jay Pellicci and mastered by Amy Dragon. Set for digital release this Wednesday, exclusive to Sun 13, be the first watch/ listen for the first time below.
Once again featuring drummer, Aaron Kroeger, and bassist, John Pomeroy, Hag Stone sees Nichols continue to unfurl an effortless brand of West Coast-flavoured indie-pop. With echoes of early Death Cab for Cutie that are both sunny and heartfelt, following the the Love Lies single, it’s another strong outing for the songwriter in anticipation of their as of yet untitled forthcoming LP.
Speaking of Hag Stone, Nichols comments:
“The idea behind the video for Hag Stone was really simple: use mirrors to sort of visually illustrate a big theme of the song, which is the way we know ourselves really only through the way other people see us. I was thinking about the Velvet Underground’s I’ll Be Your Mirror a little bit, and I also just liked the way the mirrors were such a simple way of making the landscape look suddenly strange and unreal.
“The mirrors we used in the video, which was shot on the California coast, about 10 miles north of Morro Bay (which, for reference is a couple of hours south of Big Sur) were a bit bendy, so they did interesting things to the light. We filmed the video on a clear day in September 2024 and although it looks quite warm the sea in that part of the world is notoriously frigid. Even still, it was a beautiful day with a bunch of friends, making something a bit strange out in the middle of nowhere.”
Hag Stone is out April 2. Pre-save here.
