Chicago post-metal titans, Pelican, have announced their first long-player in six years, and first since 2009 to feature their original line-up.
Following last year’s Adrift/Tending the Embers EP which featured in Sun 13’s Top 25 EPs of 2024, Flickering Resonance is set for release on May 16 via Run For Cover.
Today the band share lead track, Cascading Crescent, which you can watch/ listen to below. It will also be available as a limited 7” single, including a viny-exclusive vocal version featuring Geoff Rickly (Thursday).
The band have also announced a US, EU and UK tour, which includes a run of dates supporting Russian Circles in March, and an appearance at Bristol’s Arctangent Festival in August (tour dates below).
With founding guitarist Laurent Schroeder-Lebec rejoining the band alongside fellow guitarist, Trevor Shelley de Brauw and brothers Bryan and Larry Herweg (bass and drums, respectively), during the heyday of Chicago’s all ages hub Fireside Bowl, it was venue that paved the way for an electric range of acts, becoming a vital source to the Pelican story.
“A lot of people didn’t hear it at first,” says Schroeder-Lebec of the band’s roots and punk-related subgenres. “I was like, ‘Well, I guess the metal world is where we fit’. But now we’re more willing to acknowledge all the suits we’re wearing.”
Speaking of Schroeder-Lebec’s ten-year sabbatical from the group, which ended when the band reissued their debut long-player, Australasia back in 2021, Shelley de Brauw offers further comment via the press release. “When Laurent left and we were able to carry it through, there became a real sense of gratitude for the fact we still have this artistic outlet and a community of people who want to support it.”
